Charles Andrew Johnson papers, 1832-1896 (bulk 1858-1894).

The collection contains passports of Sidney L. Johnson (1832-1833, 1841) and Charles Andrew Johnson (1865); letters in French from Michael Thomassin Andry, a Louisiana planter, to Charles A. Johnson (1858); letters (1861) from Thomas S. Burbank concerning money owed to Andry; military passes (1863-1864); a receipt for bonds (1864); and bank checks (1866-1869). Two letters and a newspaper clipping (1873) relate to lawsuits of Charles A. Johnson. The estimates and plans (1876) of architects Charles Lewis Hillger and William Fitzner concern the restoration of the "Seamen's Home" on New Levee Street and repair of buildings formerly occupied by the Fairbanks and Gilman Sugar Refinery in New Orleans. Included are bills for merchandise; rent receipts; checks drawn on the Bank of America; a broadside (1875) of the New York, Havana & Mexican Mail Steamship Line; and a broadside of the resolutions passed by the Bar of New Orleans at the death of Edward Anthony Bradford.

Charles Andrew Johnson, a native of New Haven, Connecticut, was a lawyer in New Orleans, Louisiana. He served as judge for the 2nd Judicial District at Donaldsonville in 1843, and in 1855, began a partnership with Henry Denis in the New Orleans firm Johnson, Denis, Berault and Legendre. Michael Thomassin Andry, born in 1811, owned and operated sugar plantations in Saint John the Baptist and Saint Charles Parishes, Louisiana. His first wife was Martha Henriette Boudousquie and his second was Marie Rosa Haydel. He was the father of five children.
